Doctor Jazz

Based on the version from the musical "Jelly's Last Jam", this hidden gem is one of the earliest examples of New Orleans jazz. Written by King Oliver, this version celebrates the life of Jelly Roll Morton--providing a teaching opportunity for your students to learn about the lives of both of these jazz legends. It features an introductory duet between a baritone and a muted trumpet, setting the stage for a burst of enthusiastic, electrifying music that only jazz can deliver!

Listen, people, here comes Doctor Jazz
He's got glory all around him, yes he has
When the world goes wrong and you've got the blues
He's the one what makes you get out both your dancin' shoes

Front 'n' center, the inventor o' jazz
Got the magic, yes he has
Ain't no medicine known to man
Can make you feel good like the doctor can

Only name that you need to know
World's greatest one man show
Even the devil, whoever he was
Couldn't play jazz the way Jelly does
Hello central, give me Doctor Jazz

Hello central, give me Doctor Jazz
Got glory all around him, oh, yes he has
Come on, on your feet, and swing with the roll
Feel that rhythm rippin' through ya
Right down to your soul

So spread the word, wherever you may go
Oh yeah, you've seen the light tonight, now you know
Blaze his name across the sky
Flamin' letters ten feet high
J.R. Morton, Doctor Jazz!

Hello world, you go an' yell it
Who do you love? Jelly! Louder!
Everybody loves that Doctor Jazz--
Doctor Jazz!
Doctor Jazz!
It's Doctor Jazz!

(Gregory Hines, Jelly's Last Jam)
