What If
From his 2023 album The End, "What If" is another great example of Cody Fry's signature songwriting style of "orchestral pop". The song was born out of his own experience with anxiety, and teaches us that there may be a worst possible outcome in any situation, but there is also a best possible outcome. This arrangement features an alto soloist during the quiet section after the bridge, who then belts out the lead over an epic final chorus filled with soaring strings and gospel vocals. The instrumentation is driven by a strong hemiola effect rarely heard in pop music, making this selection a unique and enriching musical experience for your students.

I drive across bridges, so worried 'bout falling that I miss the view Already watching the news reports saying there was nothing anyone could do In my mind, what if I fall? But if it's in my mind What if I fly? Get a little higher Get outta my head for a minute And just feel the wind on my face Maybe the fear Just means I'm alive Maybe I'll fall But what if I fly? When I get to the end of my life I wanna know that I used my time And it may be that I'll take the fall But if it's in my mind So what if I fall Straight out of the sky Would I rather look back and wonder Or know that I actually tried? What if I fly? Get a little higher Get outta my head for a minute And just feel the wind on my face Maybe the fear Just means I'm alive Maybe I'll fall But what if I fly? What if I fly? What if I fly? Maybe I'll fall But what if I fly? Maybe the fear only means I'm alive Maybe the fear only means I'm alive What if the fear only means I'm alive? What if I fly? (Cody Fry)
